Why these five, specifically?
Not random. These are the languages your reception team already navigates every day.
We picked the five most-spoken community languages in Welsh GP catchment areas, by community size and by how often they show up at reception:
- Cymraeg — statutory under the Welsh Language Standards. If you serve Welsh patients, you offer Welsh. We just make it free instead of a paid add-on.
- Polski — the largest non-British heritage community in Wales. Most practices already keep a Polish-speaking receptionist’s number handy.
- Română — the fastest-growing newer-arrival community. Often less well-served by existing translation services.
- Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) & Urdu (اردو) — long-established South Asian heritage communities, particularly across Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and the South Wales valleys. Urdu in particular is under-served on most NHS web estates.
If your catchment includes a sixth language that matters — Bengali, Arabic, Mandarin, Tigrinya, Pashto — we can add it. Same template, same approach. Tell us.
How it works on the site itself.
A small language switcher in the header. One tap, the whole site flips. URL changes to /cy/, /pl/, /ro/, /pa/ or /ur/.
What gets translated automatically
- Navigation labels, footer columns, button labels
- Page titles & section headings
- The contact/opening-hours/services scaffolding
- The “you’re reading a translated page” banner (so patients know to verify clinically critical detail)
What you write yourself
- Your specific service descriptions, team bios, news items, urgent notices — these stay in English on the mirror pages with the translated UI around them, until you (or a translator you commission) review them.
Why we’re honest about that
Machine-translated medical content carries real clinical risk. We translate the framework of the site so a Romanian patient can navigate. We don’t auto-translate “please come on an empty stomach for your bloods” without a clinician’s eye on it.
